Moorabbin Lions Back Roads ‘Road-trip’

Lions may be aware that the 123READ2ME project invited representatives from disadvantaged schools to come to the 123READ2Me warehouse (then in Dandenong South) and help themselves to all the children’s books they wanted – for free!

The ensuing spree with happy teachers filling their car boots and trailer loads going to regional centres is now old news (see the February ‘Buzz’).

Unfortunately quite a few small Primary schools in tiny back roads country towns, with one or two teachers, and maybe a dozen or two students were not able take advantage of the 123READ2ME offer.

That’s where Moorabbin Lions stepped in with John and Marilyn Lissenburg filling up their utility with boxes of books, pre-sorted, and packed specially for half a dozen schools in the Victorian Goldfields Region.

Schools visited were at Trawalla, Amphitheatre, Avoca, Natte Yallock, Redesdale Mia Mia and Langley. The weather was fine, the back roads scenery beautiful (so nice to get off the highway!)

The reception these Lions received from teachers was heart-warming and the excited reaction from students when they were opening the boxes made the trip well worthwhile.

Time was found for a picnic lunch and a bit of silo art photography. A big day out and, on arrival back home a large pizza and cuppa tea went down well.

Just another day in the life of a couple of Lions.
